GEOPHYSICS AND MICROGEOPHYSICS APPLIED TO THE SAFEGUARD OF CULTURAL AND
ARCHEOLOGICAL PATRIMONY

ERICE-SICILY: 28 SEPTEMBER - 4 OCTOBER 2006

The School is organizing a series of new Courses-Workshops dedicated to the
current developments of geophysical exploration methods and instruments applied
to an expanding spectrum of targets, both shallow and deep. Two courses have been
devoted to the role of geophysical methods in environmental problems (Development
of geophysical methods-application to shallow targets, March 2000, and Geophysics
for cultural and environmental resources, October 2001); the last one (Application
of geophysical methods to hydrogeological problems, April 2003) paid attention to
the problem of water resources. The new one, the 13th Course of the International
school of Applied Geophysics, will deal with a relatively new field of rapidly
increasing importance especially in Countries of old civilization: The safeguard of
cultural and archeological patrimony. The wide range of objectives requires a
combination of methods at a higher degree than in other fields. The reason for it is
that the targets are always shallow and very shallow and, therefore, subjected to
strong lateral inhomogeneities. Also the problems of noise is often more severe, so
that particular and new processing techniques should be used for interpretation and
visualization. The Course is intended especially to the benefit of PhD students in
Geophysics, Geological Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Archeological and
Cultural Sciences, but also of Researchers and Technicians of the Institutions
concerned with the protection and safeguard of the cultural and archeological
patrimony, whose knowledge on the potential of geophysical methods needs to be
updated.
The purposes of the Course are: to describe the state-of-the-art and to foster
the geophysical methods and instruments used or usable in the application to cultural
and archeological research and studies; to discuss the role and the weight of each
method and technique and the need for a combination of the multiple data sets for
reaching the different targets; to illustrate case histories of application.
