ANCIENT GLASS STUDIES - Some Outstanding Questions

Prof. Mike Tite*
Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art University of Oxford

The history of ancient glass production will be surveyed from its beginnings in Mesopotamia and Egypt around 1500 BC, through the switch from plant ash based to natron based glass at the beginning of the first millennium BC, to the very large scale production of glass during the Roman period, following the invention of glass blowing. Finally the demise of natron based glass and the return to plant ash based glass in the Near East and Egypt in 9th century AD is briefly discussed. At each stage in the history of glass production, the emphasis will be on some of the outstanding questions that have recently been, or are currently being, considered. For example, why was there a 2000 year gap between faience production and the beginning of glass production, how was cobalt rich alum discovered as a colorant for glass, why is there so little natron based glass from Egypt early in first millennium BC, and why was there a switch from antimony based to tin based opacifiers in 4th/5th century AD. Inaddition, the question as to whether glass was produced locally from raw materials, or whether it was imported as glass ingots which were then worked into objects is a question that needs to be considered atall stages of glass production.
