convegno internazionale "First Vatican Coffin Conference"
First Vatican Coffin Conference
Vatican Museums Conference Hall 19 - 22 June 2013
The Egyptian Department of the Musei Vaticani, in collaboration with the Egyptian Departments of the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, are pleased to invite you to attend the ‘First Vatican Coffin Conference’. The ‘Vatican Coffin Project’ itself is the impulse for this conference.
For two years now our institutions have been cooperating in this project which is directed by Dr. Alessia Amenta, Curator of the Vatican Egyptian Department, in collaboration with the Vatican Diagnostic Laboratory for Conservation and Restoration, directed by Prof. Ulderico Santamaria.
The aim is the study of coffin construction and painting techniques in order to better understand the iconographical and textual structure of TIP coffins. The first batch of coffins analysed to date, housed in our respective collections, belongs to the Babel-Gasus corpus.
The Protocol of analyses was carried out by the Vatican Diagnostic Laboratory for Conservation and Restoration.
