Excursion: Petrified Forest Park, Thailand 28-31 December 2013 (Tentative plan)

28 Dec 2013 Departure from the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources (NRIPM), Nakhon Ratchasima Province to the Petrified Forest Park, Tak province, northwestern Thailand (about 8 hr drive)

29-31 Dec 2013 Visit some of the world's largest petrified trees, close examination and recording of their preservation state to estimate the type and quantity of chemicals and materials needed for their conservation. Examination of other fossil trees which are partially exposed but still unexcavated in the forest.
Additionally, visit other geological sites or forest parks nearby may be visited, in order to estimate the possibility of setting up a Geopark. Time allowing, visit Taksin Maharat National Park to see Thailand's largest Anisoptera costata(Dipterocarpacecae), a 700-year oldtree measuring 50 meters (160 feet) in height and 16 meters (52 feet) in circumference and other trees with the large buttress in the national park.
